Search for craft ideas involving small wooden logs and you find plenty of them: candle holders, name plaques, miniature planters, garlands. Some are pleasant. What most of them do not mention is that a complete construction set is worth considerably more as a construction set, and that cutting one up is a decision you cannot reverse.

Complete sets are rarer than they look

Most second-hand boxes are already short of roof boards, chimneys or the long logs that everything depends on. A full set with its gables and slabs intact is genuinely useful and genuinely harder to find. Turning it into a wreath because it was sitting in a cupboard destroys the one thing that made it valuable to the next child.

Buy craft dowel instead

If the project needs short lengths of round timber, a length of plain dowel from a hardware shop costs very little and cuts to whatever size you want. It has no notches, which most craft projects do not need anyway. Keeping a set from a range such as Lincoln Logs whole and buying two metres of dowel is cheaper than the craft blog implies.

Kitchens contain a surprising number of small detachable parts, and a few of them are genuinely hazardous to a child who finds them.

Why Small Parts Matter

Young children explore by putting things in their mouths. That is normal development rather than a behaviour problem.

The risk is airway obstruction, and the size that matters is roughly that of a young child's windpipe. A useful rough guide is anything that fits through a toilet roll tube.

Round, firm and smooth objects are the worst combination, because they seal an airway completely.

What to Watch For

• Silicone seals and gaskets that pull out of lids
• Small lids from portion pots and dressing containers
• Straw tips, valves and detachable mouthpieces
• Caps, plugs and vent covers from bottles
• Anything that has cracked and shed a fragment

Sets sold in quantity, of the kind at vitever.net, mean small lids exist in numbers, and storing them in one closed box rather than loose in a low drawer is worth doing in a household with a toddler.

写在前面

当我应该忙于工作的时候，读闲书的欲望反而会变得特别高涨，这是一种另类的拖延症，但管它呢，早就没救了。

历史是我特别感兴趣的一个门类，每当我弄清了一段时间一块地域内的政治文化变迁，就会产生一种浑身苏畅的感觉。

近期读的书是吕思勉老爷子的《中国通史》，老爷子是民国时期真正的大师，考据详尽，文笔老到，虽然偶有夹带私货，但也无伤大雅。

这本书分为了文化和政治两编，文化史有些枯燥晦涩，待我后面再品。政治史脉络相对清晰，粗度一遍，政治变迁就能在脑海里生动起来，心下一喜，那就写它一篇简单的读书笔记吧！
